Business Bites – Actions not Donations to save the planet

This month Kay Chauhan, Business Correspondent for Wandsworth Radio, also caught up with CEO and Founder of the Social Enterprise The Do-Nation, Hermione Taylor, who is an innovator who came up with a unique way of getting people to pledge actions to help the environment instead of donating money. Hermione is now in her 6th year with a staff of six and is helping businesses to find ways to engage staff to reduce carbon emissions by carrying out simple challenges such as cycling to work or taking the stairs, as well as helping business to enhance their environmental credentials and improve on their Bottom Line at the same time.

Business Bites – Flexible Funding for SMEs

Since the financial crash of 2008, High Street Banks have become notoriously stringent about lending to small businesses, and to be perfectly honest lending to anyone really. Go to any business networking event and it won’t be long before you hear the six year old mantra that High Street banks do not want to part with their loans unless you have a pretty good track record over three years, or you are willing to put down your personal assets as collateral. However, Market Invoice is one of a growing number of non-banks or alternative financial institutions that are bucking the trend and have created an online solution for SMEs looking to access funding. The fin-tech or Finance Technology it is using is also chipping away at the £80 billion stranglehold, or 85 per cent of the market that traditional banks have on invoice trading, where a business trades invoices with long payment terms, typically with corporate clients or well-known brands – in return for liquidity that would enable the business to continue to trade. Oliver Cummings, Partnerships Manager at Market Invoice, explains to Kay Chauhan how the fin-tech sector is helping SMEs access flexible and cheaper funding to run and grow their business, in the same way that ITunes and Spotify took the music industry by storm.

Local business spotlight – Northcote Road SW11

Second instalment of our #DiscoverLocal series, supporting independent businesses in and around London. We first launched this initiative in November 2014 ahead of Small Business Saturday on 6 December to remind you to support, inspire and promote independents businesses, because as tempting as the big crazy offers from the giants might be, the small business owners need our support throughout the year. They are constantly struggling to make ends meet whilst making really small margins, and still they manage to bring very good deals and offer true value for money We hope you enjoy these stories and please contact us if you too are a Small Business with a story to tell. Maybe your products are highly bespoke and allow you to express yourself creatively, maybe you offer a hub for other makers to showcase their products, maybe you simply want to show the world everything that is on offer in your community. We’d love to tell your story.
